...in
the United States a woman is battered;
...every 2 minutes a woman is raped;
...every 6 hours a woman is murdered by her batterer.
Citizen
Vagrom - the information subway begins its fourth year of grassroots
production with two major works on violence against women never
before seen in Seattle.
To Empower Women
From the Fourth World Conference
on Women, "To Empower Women: The Bejing Platform for Action" by
Margo Smith, presents leaders from Zimbabwe, Germany, Papua New
Guinea, Iran, the Philippines, Israel, the Solomon Islands and the
United States who tell of their efforts to improve conditions for
women.
The Bejing Platform for Action
was signed by 189 Nations, and is widely considered the strongest
statement of consensus on women's equality, empowerment and justice
ever produced by governments. Five planks from the platform -- poverty,
education, economics, human rights and armed conflict -- frame this
video documentary on the conference.
From Brutality to Hope
"From Brutality to Hope" is a
remarkable work by Robert Markey which documents a public art installation,
"Witness to Violence". In 1995, "Witness to Violence" was presented
in fifteen cities around the country.
A canvas was placed in public
spaces, and signatures were gathered to call attention to the violence
experienced by women in our communities.
Women survivors signed their
names in black on the canvas. Friends and relatives of women murdered
wrote names of victims in red. Men stood by to update the ongoing
talley.
The video captures the essence
of this action, and is underscored with accounts by women, and confessions
by men.
